Violence Prevention

News coverage of violence by young children and young adults has focused a great deal of attention on this issue. Previous research suggests that mental health approaches to violence prevention are among the most effective and cost efficient approaches. However, "best practices" for violence prevention have not been easily disseminated. Rural areas have been denoted as potentially more problematic due to the stress and isolation of low population density, fewer mental health professionals, and the potential for easy access to weapons. The investigation and evaluation of prevention programming can be improved with well-positioned community relationships and effective program content and methods.

The NRBHC has worked with the Columbia County School District on several large grant projects that are aimed at reducing youth violence and the risk factors associated with violence.
